Ph.D. in Town, Regional and Landscape Planning, graduated in Architecture, with a Master degrees in Landscape Architecture at the University of Florence, she is one of the founding members and the current president of “Verdiana Network”, non-profit org. based in Florence. She’s been Involved in research projects on Cultural Itineraries and other topics dealing with landscape studies, she is currently working as public secondary school’s teacher. She has authored academic and non-academic papers concerning Cultural Itineraries and their landscape implications and she is one of the authors of a guidebook on the pilgrimage route of Via Lauretana in Central Italy.
Serena Savelli Verdiana Network Association

PhD in Environment and Landscape Planning and Management, since November 2013, graduated in Landscape Architecture in 2007 and graduated in Forestry Science in 2004. Her PhD thesis systematically analyzes and compares the perception of landscape by both pilgrims and inhabitants settled along the routes, it also proposes visions of cultural route as a great linear landscape parks. In 2010 with a group of designers she developed the landscape and the safety project of Via Francigena, inside the municipal district of Montefiascone.
Maria Teresa Idone Verdiana Network Association

She is an architect with a PhD in Knowledge and Design of Urban Landscape. Her research interests are dealing with the issues of cultural itineraries, natural/cultural heritage and contemporary and sustainable landscapes. She is currently developing a post-doc research on green economy and sustainable development of mountain areas at the University of Camerino and the European Academy of Bolzano. As consultant for the Italian Ministry for the Environment, within the Italian Delegation of the Alpine Convention, she developed competences in the field of territorial cooperation and management of natural resources.
Lucio L. Pettine Verdiana Network Association

PhD student in Landscape and Environment. He graduated in Landscape Architecture in 2009 and Garden Design in 2007. He is currently working on the Mediterranean application of Water Sensitive Urban Design a philosophical approach to urban design for a sustainable water management. His design approach is always addressed to the knowledge of the site. He works as a freelance landscaper in various ateliers of Rome. In 2010 with a group of designers he developed the landscape and the safety project of Via Francigena, inside the municipal district of Montefiascone.

Abstract

The essay investigates the opportunities generated by recovering a European Pilgrimage Route’s pathway as device for landscape perception and territorial analysis. It is focused on a project conducted by Verdiana Network in collaboration with the Municipality of Asciano (Siena). The project aims to activate processes of landscape planning and management, and promote local tourism within the context of Asciano’s rural landscape and among the cultural and natural heritage intercepted by this pilgrimage route. It concerns the Siena branch of the Via Lauretana, the pilgrimage route toward the Sanctuary of Loreto in the Marche Region. The project focuses on the landscape structure of the route, modelled by the territorial dimension and spatial configuration of the itinerary, together with the social processes of landscape perception activated by the route itself. From this point of view, the project consisted of a process of discovering the landscape along the route and intercepting polar elements that make the itinerary the basis for the development of local tourism and cultural activities.
